…Now She’s a Peppy Pooch!

An early spring brings beautiful blooms but also awful allergies that can torment pets as well as humans. For example, meet Molly, a 3-year-old Mini Goldendoodle that’s been battling allergies since she was a pup.

When Molly’s owners, Pat and Ann, first took her to see Dr. Busselman, she was less than a year old and one miserable doggy. Her ears were raw and inflamed and according to Ann, Molly was “scratching her ears until they bled.” In addition, Molly was “carpet surfing,” lying on her side and dragging her ears and head along the carpet and then repeating on the other side.

After a thorough exam and tests to rule out other causes, it was determined that Molly probably had seasonal allergies.

“At that time, Dr. Busselman explained to us four different treatment options available including a steroid medication,” says Ann.

“He answered all of our questions and together we decided on how we’d proceed. At first we regularly used a medication called Atopica™.* Now we’re able to use the generic version of that med and only when allergy season hits. We also use a calming shampoo, Douxo® Calm and we’ve been able to get all of those at Fort Street Vet.”

Ann recalls that after treatment Molly’s ears and itching got much better fairly quickly. However, Molly soon developed gastrointestinal symptoms: She began vomiting her food right after eating.

“It’s not uncommon for pets with seasonal allergies to have other sensitivities,” explains Dr. Busselman. “In Molly’s case we determined she had a food allergy and put her on a prescription food, Royal Canin Veterinary Diet® Selected Protein PW, for pets with food sensitivities. The new food did the trick.”

Today, Molly eats well, scratches a lot less, and enjoys daily romping with her best buddy, 10-year-old, Joslyn.

“Molly can be such a sweet pea, it was really hard to watch when she was suffering,” Ann recalls. “We’re just very grateful to Dr. Busselman and the folks at Fort Street Vet for quickly diagnosing her problems and making her better.”
