Surgical specialist at Fort Street Veterinarian

Posted on 2010-11-08 11:59:25

I am pleased to announce that David F. Merkley DVM, MS, DACVS, a board certified surgeon, is regularly coming to the practice to perform some of the most progressive and difficult surgeries. These procedures usually can only be accomplished at a referral clinic or university due to their specialized nature, but we will be doing them in our facilities eliminating the need for travel out of town. We strive to keep the practice progressive and offer the highest level of excellence in all areas. This is just one way we continue to give you the best care right here at home. I have included a small bio on Dr Merkley. If you would like more information you can visit his website at http://veterinarysurgicalspecialists.com

Dr. David Merkley was born in Minnesota and grew up in South Dakota in a family of large animal veterinarians. He attended the University of South Dakota (USD) and earned a BA degree in mathematics. He attended Iowa State University (ISU) for his degree in veterinary medicine (DVM). His surgical training was obtained at Michigan State University (MSU) where he completed an MS degree in veterinary surgery and his residency in small animal veterinary surgery (orthopedic and soft tissue surgery). He obtained certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) in 1977 by examination. He has spent over 35 years in veterinary surgical education (teaching, surgical research and clinical surgery). During this time he provided surgical services to the clients of the referral teaching hospitals at both MSU and ISU. In 2004 he began surgical consulting with private practice veterinary colleagues in eastern Nebraska, southeastern South Dakota, southwestern Minnesota and west-central Iowa. In 2006, Dr. Merkley established Veterinary Surgical Specialists of Nebraska PC (VSSON) to formalize the business relationships he had established with his veterinary colleagues. He provides small animal surgical services in both orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. He brings a very high level of clinical surgical expertise developed in his many years of university teaching, research and surgery.

Blue Buffalo recall!!!

Posted on 2010-10-08 12:43:06

I just wanted to let any of you who are feeding Blue Buffalo dog food know that they are having  a recall on some of their food. It has to much Vitamin D in it and is causing some serious high calcium issues in some dogs. The type of foods that are being recalled are Blue Wilderness Chicken and Blue Basics Salmon and Potato, as well as Blue Large Breed Adult Chicken and Brown Rice.

If you are feeding any of these please stop immediately and contact Blue Buffalo

Africa here I come

Posted on 2010-08-23 06:46:52

I wanted everyone to know that Dr England will be running the shop for about 10 days as I go off to Mali West Africa starting  this upcoming Sunday. I am leading a team of 5 guys into the area outside Koutiala to work with their livestock. We will be going into the tribes and opening doors for other teams to come in. The tribes are very reluctant to allow westerners in to help them but because their animals are so important to them, they will let our team in. After we work on there animals, they will other teams with humanitarian and spiritual support come in. It has been a very successful model and I look forward to the adverture. We will be in the air for 36 hours both ways which will give us 4 days to be in the tribes. When you come in to the practice, ask me about the trip, I am sure to have a picture or two.
